What I’ve Learned From Walking An Hour Every Morning

What I’ve Learned From Walking for an Hour Every Morning

If you work from home for some or all of your time, then you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say this: it is so easy to walk between my desk, the kitchen, and back and forth – and rack up a whole... maybe 3k steps a day? A few more if I go for a run? Ouch. I don’t really want to admit it, but it’s true!

So... I’ve been trying to change that. I started dedicating one hour of my morning to going for a walk. Getting out and walking every morning. Even when I'm busy. Or it's raining. Or I have a long to-do list. Or whatever other reason I was coming up with.

And I was genuinely surprised at what happened! I’ve been doing it every day for a while now, and it’s been a total game-changer. Not just in terms of increasing my step count, but what those walks have done for my head, my energy, and my creativity.

It sounds incredibly simple (and it is), but just walking for an hour a day in the morning has had a much bigger impact than I thought it would.

1. Ideas in flow
I kept having to stop mid-walk to record voice notes of new ideas. It’s like my brain has more room to think when I’m moving around! Being outside, changing views, fresh air and movement unlocks my creativity for sure.

2. Ah, nature
Talking of which… there’s something about being outside that calms me down instantly. The air, the quiet (if I’m not in a city!), and just getting away from screens for a while really helps clear my mind. It’s like a reset button for my brain, and I always come back feeling more focused and ready to take on whatever is next.

3. Energy, oh hello
I’ll be using more energy than sitting at my desk, but after an hour of walking, I come back feeling awake, energised, and ready to take on the day. Like a natural pick-me-up that fuels me for the rest of the day.

4. Hesitant to admit it, but I welcomed the structure
Working from home has it’s perks, but let’s be honest – it can get a bit… meh…without some structure. Walking in my mornings has given me a bit of routine and an excuse to step away from my desk. And yes, I’ll admit it – I’ve welcomed the structure!

5. A chance to pause a little
Life moves fast, and it’s so easy to rush through it all and move on to the next thing. But walking makes me slow down and notice things I’d normally miss. The changing seasons, the way the sun reflects on the water, the little things that remind me to be present. It’s been such a welcome pause.

6. Mental reset
After an hour of walking, it feels like my mind has been decluttered. It’s like a mental refresh that helps me think more clearly and focus better. Problems that felt overwhelming before somehow seem more manageable, and I often come back with a fresh perspective—or at least feeling a little less frazzled!

7. Geeking out
I’ve always loved learning, and I realised I’ve been missing it. And I'd stopped listening to podcasts or audiobooks altogether. Walking has become my time to tune in again and learn something new.

8. And the magic of accountability
Through coaching and group mentoring, I’ve seen how accountability can be such a game-changer. When I shared that I was adding a morning walk to my routine, I suddenly felt way more committed. Just knowing others were aware kept me showing up, even on the days I didn’t feel like it.

So, there you have it – the 8 things I’ve learned from walking for an hour every day. If you’re thinking about starting your own daily walk, I’d say go for it. You never know what it might do for you. And if you want to hold each other accountable, let me know. Let’s make it a walking challenge – I’m all in!

Oh, and one last thing I’ve learned…. never make a decision until you’ve walked on it!

With love,

Nikita x
